Diana Nemiroff, recipient of the Governer General’s award in Visual and Media Arts, is the former curator of contemporary art at the National Gallery of Canada and former director of the Carleton University Art Gallery.

This annual lecture, first held in 2011, honours the memory of Dr. Shirley Thomson (1930-2010), a leading national figure in the promotion of the visual arts in Canada.  A Companion of the Order of Canada, Thomson held many important cultural positions, including Director of the National Gallery of Canada (1987-97) and Director of the Canada Council for the Arts (1998-2002).
