Mining the Natural: Curator Tour with Rebecca Basciano

Mining the Natural: Curator Tour with Rebecca Basciano

Tuesday, July 17, 2018 - 10:00am to 12:00pm

Join this free tour from the OAG Visitor Experience desk.

This walkthrough will highlight artworks that reference or are made of materials from the natural world such as birchbark, copper, and stone. Alongside a concise geological history of the Ottawa-Gatineau region, we will discuss the cultural importance of specific materials, the knowledge and technical skills required to work with them, as well as the environmental impacts that have affected their availability.

Following the tour, participate in a thoughtful discussion based on a reading suggested by Rebecca from the exhibition’s catalogue. Click here to download the text.

Rebecca Basciano is the Assistant Curator at the Ottawa Art Gallery (OAG). She holds an MA in Art History from Carleton University (2013). Her most recent curatorial project was Gail Bourgeois: Correspondence, from roots to rhizomes to mycelial networks (2016) and its accompanying catalogue. She has also organized several exhibitions in relation to the OAG’s Firestone Collection of Canadian Art, including Coast to Coast (2016) and Ottawa Selects (2015), and manages OAG’s acquisitions and touring exhibition programs.

Each month from May to August, join one of the exhibition curators for a tour of Àdisòkàmagan / Nous connaître un peu nous-mêmes / We’ll all become stories.
